“I have always been captivated by the Philippines’ beauty: the perfect combination of sparkles, mother of pearl and shells. But this project really started to make sense to me when I discovered the richness and the quality of craftsmanship the GREAT Women in Asean Artisans were able to develop.” – Christian Louboutin
On the heels of a sensational trip to the Philippines last fall, Christian Louboutin left awe-inspired by the colourful sights and boisterous sounds - the joyful pulse of Manila, the country’s capital. While sitting in bumper-to-bumper Jeepney traffic, he marveled at the heritage and eclectic decorations bestowed on the vehicles, originally abandoned by American troops after World War II. Surrounded by the lights and sounds of Manila, Christian felt akin in an instant to the city’s celebratory spirit.
Recalling his experiences, two limited-edition versions of the new Manilacaba tote were born – Denim Blue and Black Satin. Each comprised of colourful panels of fabric embroidered in cotton threads and adorned with sequins, irreverent design details throughout the bag reference the energy of Manila and the Filipino people.
Where the adventure begins is at the intersection of brightness, endemic to Filipino design, and the flare of Christian Louboutin’s detailed design work. Around each red frame, center-front to every Manilacaba, an eye-catching arrangement of shimmering sequins nods towards the radiance of mother of pearl, a material produced and used often in native Filipino craftsmanship. Signature Christian Louboutin details, including a mix of spikes and a logo crest proudly proclaim the bag’s heritage. And don’t forget to take a peek inside Manilacaba for a flash of eye-popping pattern!
A great bag for a GREAT cause. In partnership with the GREAT (“Gender Responsive Economic Action for the Transformation of Women”) Women in ASEAN initiative, a platform supporting the craftsmanship and economic empowerment of Asian women artisans, Christian Louboutin worked closely with local Filipino artisans to bring the authentic, colourful embroidered panels of Manilacaba to life.
In addition to being paid a fair and equitable wage for their work, ten percent of the proceeds from each Manilacaba purchased will be donated to GREAT to further contribute to the organization’s development and support the women of the Philippines. Learn more about GREAT and mark your calendar for the debut of Manilacaba on May 9.
